Currently, there are only two independent Dental Oriental Medicine at dental universities or faculty of dentistry nationwide, and one of them is our university. Oriental medicine in the dental field is mutually related in many areas, such as alternative medicine, aesthetics, and beauty care, as in the medical field and thought to play a great role in disease prevention and improvement of quality of life in the future. We make various efforts to have the students recognize the objectives of learning "dentistry and oriental medicine" and increase their motivation for learning. We prepare the educational environment where students can actively acquire knowledge of oriental medicine and adopt an experience-based learning method in addition to passive learning mainly provided in lectures. In order to nurture dentists with a wide range of education, we teach the history, concepts and diagnostic methods of oriental medicine, prevention of modern lifestyle-related diseases, the health promotion method of the oriental medicine, and four health methods of the oriental medicine (diet, Chinese herbal medicine, acupuncture and moxibustion, and Qigong). Also, the students will learn acupuncture and moxibustion therapy and Chinese herbal medicine therapy in the dental field. We emphasize understanding of the difference between modern dentistry (Western medicine) and traditional view of oral care (Oriental medicine) in the dentistry and oral cavity field and the relationship between the oral cavity (part) and entire body (whole).
