To acquire and master proficiency in oral and maxillofacial surgery is the first step for gaining a comprehensive view on the oral cavity and the systemic body

In terms of education of the oral maxillofacial surgery, this department teaches about congenital anomalies, maxillofacial deformities, tumors, odontogenic tumors, tumor-like diseases, temporomandibular joint diseases, neurological diseases, blood diseases, syndromes of the oral maxillofacial region, and oral maxillofacial surgeries. In terms of clinical practice, the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery 2 at the University Hospital is in charge of not only surgeries for oral cancers, jaw deformities, temporomandibular arthrosis, alveolar ridge augmentation, facial traumas, maxillofacial implantation, impacted tooth extraction, tooth extraction from sick patients, cystic disease, etc. but also treating dental infections, mucosal diseases, neurological diseases, etc. It has been designated as certified or training institutions by organizations such as Japanese Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, Japanese Stomatological Society, Japanese Society for Temporomandibular Joint, and Japan Association of Oral Rehabilitation. The department has nine specialists, four supervisory dentists, and two certified dentists, accredited by Japanese Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons; in addition to four specialists and two supervisory dentists, accredited by Japanese Society for Temporomandibular Joint. In addition, nine supervisory dentists or specialists accredited by Japanese Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons or Japanese Society for Temporomandibular Joint are present at our affiliated hospitals: National Hospital Organization Osaka National Hospital, Kohka Public Hospital, Osaka Red Cross Hospital, Osaka Kaisei Hospital, Ishinkai Yao General Hospital, Sumitomo Hospital, and Matsushita Memorial Hospital. They provide clinical guidance to residents and postgraduates who are dispatched from this department. Our medical office members are dispatched to the Department of Anesthesiology, Osaka Red Cross Hospital, for training of anesthesiology and systemic management, as well as to the Department of Cranio-Maxillofacial Surgery, School of Medicine, University of Bern, Switzerland, and the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, GKT School of Dentistry, University of London, UK, for overseas clinical training.
