Standards for Dissertation Review

Doctorate Dissertation (Dentistry)

  • The dissertation should add new knowledge to the conventional academic standards, including information contributing to progress of the culture, based on creative research at the postdoctoral program of the School of Dentistry.
  • The dissertation should be published or planned to be published in a scientific journal with a peer review system, with the applicant of the degree as the first author.

Review System

The applicant of the degree should orally present contents of the dissertation at a dissertation review meeting, which will be evaluated on the following items, through consultation of one principal examiner and two deputy examiners.

Review Item

Dissertation for doctoral program in the Graduate School of Dentistry shall be reviewed based on the following items:

  • The applicant fully understands and complies with research ethics.
  • The dissertation presents novelty, originality, and possibility of further development in an area of expertise.
  • The background and purpose of the study are well explained.
  • The applicant acquired an ability to draw up and execute research plans.
  • The applicant accurately evaluated the obtained research data and analysis results to draw conclusions.
  • The applicant can discuss about the obtained results and have future prospects.
  • The applicant can present the contents and results of the study in simple and appropriate expressions.
  • The applicant can give accurate answers to questions based on his/her expertise.

Doctoral degree to be granted after completing a course study ("regular doctoral degree")

Doctoral degree to be granted by dissertation alone ("doctoral degree by dissertation")
