Educational Goal

  1. To foster "researcher's mind" and "a sense of mission" as a dental researcher
  2. To learn the basics of oral health, public health, socio-dentistry, data collection/analysis required for writing research papers and scientific verification methods
  3. To have a clear vision of the future direction of oral health and dental care

  1. Clinical epidemiological study in dentistry
  2. Public health research on life course oral health (children and mothers, schools, industries, adults, elders, and disabled)
  3. Research on relationship between oral health and general health using medical insurance data
  4. Research on development of oral and nasal mucosal vaccines for periodontal diseases, etc.
  5. Research on prevention of atherosclerosis based on mucosal immunity
  6. Research on antimicrobial effects and host-immunological effects of active ingredients derived from natural materials
  7. Research on early caries diagnosis
  8. Research on oral functions in infants and school children
  9. Research on dental medical supply and demand using geographic information system
  10. A regional correlation research on the oral health status and socioeconomic factors in Japan and China
  11. Research on the effect of various beverages on the progression and control of development of dental caries

Features of this major / Prospects following course completion

Epidemiological research and basic research are positioned as the two pillars of dental research, we provide mutual feedbacks from the both researches to proceed. Therefore, we are creating an environment where we can provide a wide range of research guidance for various research methods, according to interests of each student, from qualitative research to molecular biological research.

A student who completed the graduate school may choose to be engaged in any of the following activities:

  1. Research and education at a dental college/university
  2. Oral health administration as a public servant (Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, prefectural government, etc.)
  3. Education and research at a dental hygienists training institution
  4. Dental clinical practice mainly in preventive dentistry as a clinical dentist
