OSAKA DENTAL UNIVERSITY

Research Challenge Presentation 2019 was held at Kuzuha Campus on July 17. 21 groups of 3rd year students of the School of Dentistry made presentations about their research. "Research Challenge" is offered in the 3rd year curriculum for students who achieved high grades during their 2nd year. This year, there were 53 students, 17 more than last year. From April, students were divided into groups (five students "challenged" individually), decided their research subject under the direction of their faculty adviser, and drafted the research method and plan. Finally, they presented the results to the class on the last day.

Each group's presentation was about ten minutes including a question session. Some of the research topics were as follows: The effect of Makeup on Bacteria on the Face, Application of AI to Dentistry, Epidemiological Studies on Oral Care at Psychiatric Hospitals, Establishing the Method of Tongue Coat Caring Which is Easy for Anyone, Making Dental Specimens Which are Useful to Dental Education and Patient Education, Involvement of Archery in Occlusion.
There were many kinds of research challenges; such as continuing and developing the research of last years students, useful research for everyday life, and even research which appeared difficult even for the teachers. Unique ideas, which were made with young sensibility and flexibility, were presented.

After the presentation, students gave these impressions: "It was a good opportunity for me because I wanted everyone to know my research, which I worked hard for", "I am glad that we researched well and made a good presentation together", "It was very rewarding when the advisors praised my presentation."
Prof. Masahiro Tanaka, Dean of Student Affairs, said, "Your research does not end with this presentation. I hope that you continue to research and change the dental field of Japan." Prof. Tatsuro Miyake, a junior year adviser, shared his expectations by saying, "You gave a presentation about your research plan today, but research work gets interesting when you get results. If the result can be applied to the real world, it will be even more interesting. I wish that you experience this feeling someday."
